The Discover It Secured credit card is an excellent card for someone who is either building their credit, or attempting to improve their credit score. If you fit that description, you need to try to get this card. There are so many great benefits this card offers that I’ll fill you in on.
I remember years ago when I was sitting with a credit score in the mid 500s, I came across a lot of information online regarding building credit. One of the things I kept seeing mentioned was a Secured credit card. After research, I chose the Discover Secured card.
The more information I came across the more excited I became about getting at least one of the cards. Just to fill you in, up until that point I had one credit card. It was a store credit card and I really didn’t understand the concept of credit cards back when I had the store card. I just knew I needed to pay off the balance once I stopped using it. It helped my credit a little bit, but it did not help it enough because I was not using the card correctly.
I gained a lot more information in regards to how to use credit cards correctly and the concept of credit. By the time I was applying for a secured card, I knew what I was looking for in a secured card. I wanted to get a card that graduates and gives me my initial deposit back upon graduation. Research confirmed the card reports to the 3 of the Credit Bureaus (Experian, Transunion, Equifax), as an unsecured credit card. A good cash back incentive also helped. The Discover It card checked all of those boxes for me.
The card even graduates
I applied years ago, so the process to get the secured card was different. I initially applied for the Discover It credit card and was instantly denied. From there, Discover immediately suggested I apply for their secured credit card. I received an acceptance email almost instantly. My security deposit on the card was $200. I used my card the correct way and my card graduated prior to my one year anniversary. An email from Discover confirmed my card graduated and I received my deposit back as well. Not only did I receive my deposit back, my credit score increased by a lot of points, and I also now had a Discover It credit card that now allowed me to take advantage of the perks Discover offers.
The perks are great
Once the Discover It secured card graduates you receive cool perks. One of the perks is requesting a credit limit increase without receive a hard inquire on your credit report. That’s major when you’re attempting to build up your score. Too many hard inquiries will make building up your score a heavy task to overcome. The Discover It card is one of the few credit cards that allow you to increase your limit using only soft pulls.
Another perk is the cash back rewards and the %5 Cash back categories every quarter mark of a calendar year. Those categories often include Gas Stations, Wholesale Stores, Restaurants, and etc,. Discover It also provides you with $0 Fraud liability and free social security number alerts.
No matter if you’re trying to build your credit profile or improve your score, I co-sign this card from my personal experience with it years ago. If you already have fair credit, you may even qualify for the Discover It credit card without even needing a secured one. Its definitely worth a try.
